## Kotori Itsuka: The Flame-Wielding Commander
In the sprawling sci-fi romance of **Date A Live**, **Kotori Itsuka** is a character of dualities. She is the protagonist Shido’s foster sister, the commander of the secret organization **Ratatoskr**, and the fourth Spirit to be introduced (codenamed **Efreet**). She is the literal engine behind the series' premise, forcing Shido into the world of dating to save the world.
### The Ribbons: A Tale of Two Personalities
Kotori is famous for her "Switching" personality, which is visually represented by the color of the ribbons she wears in her hair:
* **White Ribbons (Sister Mode):** When wearing white ribbons, Kotori is the "ideal" younger sister—sweet, delicate, and deeply reliant on her "Onii-chan." This is the persona she presents to the world and the one she uses when she wants to be pampered.
* **Black Ribbons (Commander Mode):** Once she switches to black ribbons, she becomes the cold, cynical, and authoritative commander of the airship *Fraxinus*. In this mode, she is a tactical genius who isn't afraid to tease, insult, or manipulate Shido to ensure mission success.

### Abilities: The Spirit of Fire (Efreet)
Unlike most Spirits who were born in the neighboring dimension, Kotori was a human who was granted a Sephira Crystal, making her a **human-turned-Spirit**.
* **Camael (The Flame Phantom):** Her Angel takes the form of a massive, double-headed halberd. It can transform into **Megiddo**, a powerful cannon that fires blasts of concentrated thermal energy.
* **Regeneration:** Kotori’s most terrifying ability is her "immortality." As long as she has mana, her flames will instantly heal any wound, no matter how lethal.
* **The Loss of Control:** Her power is a double-edged sword. The more she uses Efreet’s strength, the more her human consciousness is swallowed by a destructive urge to burn everything to ash, a conflict that drives much of her character arc.
### Role in the Narrative
Kotori is the **architect of the story**. She created the "dating" method of sealing Spirits as a pacifist alternative to the slaughter promoted by the AST (Anti-Spirit Team).
* **The Burden of Leadership:** Despite her age, she carries the weight of the world. Her decision to involve Shido in Ratatoskr’s missions is born out of a mix of necessity and her absolute faith in his kindness.
* **Forbidden Feelings:** As a non-blood-related sibling, Kotori’s feelings for Shido are a complex mix of sisterly love and genuine romantic attraction, leading to her being a major contender in the "Shido-war," even if she often hides it behind her black-ribbon bravado.
### Why She’s an Icon
Kotori is a fan favorite because she balances being a **total powerhouse** with being a deeply flawed, vulnerable girl. She is the bridge between the normal life Shido wants and the supernatural chaos he must navigate. Plus, her love for Chupa Chups lollipops—which she is almost always seen with in Commander Mode—adds a touch of "child-genius" charm to her otherwise intimidating presence.
