## Mai Kawakami: The Close-Combat Powerhouse
In the vibrant, supernatural world of **Myriad Colors Phantom World** (*Musaigen no Phantom World*), **Mai Kawakami** is the high-spirited leader of the main team at Hosea Academy. While the protagonist, Haruhiko, handles the "encyclopedia" side of things, Mai is the frontline bruiser who handles the actual "phantom-slaying."
### Personality: The Energetic Big Sister
Mai is a ball of kinetic energy and confidence.
* **The "Onee-san" Type:** She acts as the protective older sister figure to the group. She is bold, outgoing, and sometimes a bit aggressive, often charging into battle without a second thought.
* **A Bit Simple-Minded:** In contrast to Haruhiko’s intellectual rambling, Mai prefers direct action. She isn't stupid, but she is definitely a "punch first, ask questions later" kind of person.
* **Competitive Spirit:** She has a strong martial arts background and takes great pride in her physical prowess. She’s often the one pushing the team to train harder.
---
### Abilities: Elemental Martial Arts
Mai’s ability is unique and highly visual, involving the manipulation of her own "elemental" energy through her body.
* **Five Elements Qi:** She fights using a specialized martial art that channels the five elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth). By rubbing her body in specific ways—a fan-service-heavy mechanic that the show is famous for—she "activates" different elemental properties.
* **The Fire/Water Combo:** Most commonly, she uses fire to enhance her strikes with explosive power or water for more fluid, defensive movements.
* **Physical Beast:** Even without her elemental buffs, Mai is a highly trained martial artist. Her combat style is a mix of traditional Kung Fu and street brawling.
---
### Appearance: The Iconic Blonde Fighter
Mai has one of the most recognizable character designs in the Kyoto Animation catalog:
* **Visual Style:** She is a stunning blonde with a long, high ponytail and bright blue eyes.
* **The School Uniform:** She is famously known for her customized school uniform, featuring a yellow cardigan and a short skirt, designed to emphasize her athletic and "curvy" build.
* **The Bouncing Genius:** Because it's a KyoAni production, her movement is animated with incredible fluidity—and a lot of focus on her physical "assets" during her elemental activation sequences.
---
### Why Fans Love Her
Mai is a favorite for those who enjoy **strong, upbeat female leads.**
* **The "Gap Moe":** Despite her tough-girl persona and her "bossy" attitude, she can be surprisingly vulnerable and caring, especially when it comes to her teammates.
* **Dynamic Combat:** Watching her fight is a visual treat. The way she blends martial arts with elemental magic is some of the most exciting animation in the series.
* **The "Straight Man":** She often serves as the foil to Haruhiko’s nerdy obsessions, providing the necessary reality check when he gets too deep into his explanations.
### Fun Fact
The "Limbo" scene from the first episode, where Mai has to shimmy under a pole to defeat a phantom, became a massive viral meme across the internet, cementing her place in anime pop culture history almost instantly.
Mai Kawakami is a reminder that you don't need a sword or a magic wand to hunt phantoms—sometimes, a well-placed flaming kick is more than enough.
