## Umi Asanagi: The "Second Prettiest" Soul
In the refreshing rom-com **I Made Friends with the Second Prettiest Girl in My Class**, **Umi Asanagi** is a character who challenges the superficiality of high school social hierarchies. While her title in the series implies she is "second" to the school’s idol, Amami Yuu, Umi’s depth and personality quickly prove that she is second to none in the eyes of the protagonist, Maki Maehara.
### Personality: The Relatable Realist
Umi is the perfect example of a "closet" personality. In public, she maintains the image of a trendy, social high school girl to fit in with her popular friend group. However, her true self is much more laid-back and authentic.
* **The "Gamer" Side:** Behind closed doors, Umi is an avid gamer and a fan of "un-girly" hobbies. Her bond with Maki is built on this shared secret world, where she can drop the "popular girl" act and just be herself.
* **Sharp and Observant:** Unlike the airheaded "heroine" archetype, Umi is incredibly perceptive. She notices the small details in Maki’s behavior and often provides the grounding, realistic perspective that the group needs.
* **Deeply Caring:** She is fiercely loyal to her best friend, Yuu, often acting as her protector. However, her blossoming feelings for Maki show a softer, more possessive side that she struggles to balance with her social standing.

### Why the "Second Prettiest"?
The title is a bit of a misnomer that reflects the shallow ranking of their classmates. While Yuu Amami is the "unattainable sun," Umi is the **"approachable beauty."** * **The Contrast:** Where Yuu is dazzling and overwhelming, Umi is comfortable and "real."
* **The Appeal:** The series explores the idea that being "second" actually allows Umi more freedom to have a genuine personality, as she isn't burdened by the impossible expectations placed on the "number one" girl.
### Role in the Narrative
Umi serves as the bridge between Maki (a self-proclaimed loner) and the bright world of the popular kids. Her relationship with Maki is slow-burn and built on a foundation of genuine friendship and shared interests rather than just physical attraction. She is a fan-favorite because she feels like a real person—someone who worries about her reputation but ultimately chooses the boy who likes her for her dorky, gaming-obsessed true self.
